Smashed, Sauced, and Sensational: Lachele’s Fine Foods Raises the Bar
Review:
Nestled in the heart of Downtown Des Moines on bustling Ingersoll Avenue, Lachele’s Fine Foods stands as a testament to burger perfection. This unassuming joint should be the talk of the town if it isn’t already, and for good reason – it’s serving up what I will boldly claim to be the best burgers in all of Des Moines.
As you step through the doors, you’re immediately enveloped in what I can only describe as “Grunge Diner” chic. The atmosphere is a delightful contradiction – simultaneously rough around the edges and utterly inviting. It’s as if someone took the essence of a classic American diner and filtered it through the lens of a 90s Seattle rock club.
But it’s not just the decor that sets the tone. The staff at Lachele’s are a perfect reflection of the establishment’s unique vibe. Each employee seems to have been handpicked not just for their skills, but for their ability to embody the restaurant’s ethos. They exude an unmistakable air of belonging, as if they’ve found their tribe in this burger-flipping nirvana. Their genuine enthusiasm is palpable, infusing every interaction with a sense of authenticity that’s increasingly rare in the restaurant world.
Now, onto the main event – the food. Following my golden rule of always sampling what I perceive to be the house specialty on my first visit, I opted for “The Lachele.” This eponymous burger is a masterpiece of simplicity and flavor: a juicy smash patty nestled on a fresh sesame bun, adorned with crisp pickle, sharp onion, and crisp romaine. A slice of gooey American cheese adds that classic touch, while the crowning glory is the mysterious “LFF sauce” – a house concoction that elevates this burger from great to unforgettable.
Despite being a smash patty, which often run the risk of dryness, The Lachele was impressively juicy. Each bite was a harmonious blend of textures and flavors – the crunch of fresh vegetables, the pillowy softness of the bun, and the savory umami of perfectly seasoned beef. The LFF sauce tied everything together, adding a tangy, creamy element that had me contemplating ordering a second burger before I’d even finished the first.
In a refreshing departure from the norm, Lachele’s eschews traditional fountain drinks in favor of bottled sodas. The refrigerated cooler houses an array of semi-exotic carbonated concoctions that pair surprisingly well with their menu offerings. It’s a small touch, but one that speaks volumes about Lachele’s commitment to offering a unique dining experience.
In a city with no shortage of burger options, Lachele’s Fine Foods has managed to distinguish itself not just through its excellent food, but through its commitment to creating a holistic dining experience. From the moment you walk in to the last sip of your artisanal soda, every aspect of your visit feels carefully considered yet effortlessly cool. It’s more than just a meal – it’s a glimpse into a world where passion for good food intersects with a distinct cultural vibe, resulting in what might just be the perfect burger joint.
