Review:

Skip’s, a self-proclaimed “staple in Des Moines since 1981,” promises an upscale dining experience with personalized service. Upon entering, I was immediately struck by the cozy ambiance – dark wood paneling and a small wrap-around bar created an inviting atmosphere. The restaurant was bustling with patrons, often a promising sign of good food to come.

The service at Skip’s lived up to their claim of being personalized. The staff was attentive and professional, providing top-notch service throughout my visit. This aspect of the experience certainly met the “upscale” standard they advertise.

For my meal, I decided to try the Tuna Melt. Here’s where things took an unexpected turn. The dish arrived open-faced, resembling eggs benedict more than a traditional tuna melt. While the food tasted good overall, the tuna itself could have benefited from more flavor. The presentation and style of the dish caught me off guard, affecting my enjoyment of the meal.

After my meal, I double-checked the menu to see if I had missed any description of the open-faced nature of the tuna melt. Finding no such mention, I was left feeling that the dish didn’t quite live up to its “melt” moniker.

Despite the unexpected presentation of my meal, the overall experience at Skip’s was not without merit. The inviting atmosphere and excellent service suggest that this long-standing Des Moines restaurant has much to offer. However, the disparity between my expectations and the reality of my meal indicates there might be room for improvement in menu descriptions or dish execution.

In fairness to Skip’s, one dish isn’t enough to fully judge a restaurant with such a long history. I plan to return and try other menu items to get a more comprehensive view of what Skip’s has to offer. For now, Skip’s remains an intriguing spot with potential, even if my first meal didn’t quite hit the mark.

Pros:

Inviting, cozy atmosphere, Excellent, personalized service, Long-standing local establishment

Cons:

Menu descriptions could be more detailed
